Keep your Hormones Healthy!

Top tips to keep your hormones beautifully balanced

Hormones are your body’s chemical messengers and affect many aspects of overall health.  Keep them balanced!  Here’s how:

  • Eat your greens: fibrous cruciferous vegetables keep hormones balanced with their Vitamin B content and enzymes which support the liver.
  • Eat regularly and enough protein. This keeps blood sugar levels balanced and can combat cravings for sugary foods.
  • ‘Good’ omega-3 fats found in oily fish, avocado, egg yolks, nuts, seeds can balance out hormones and help reduce feelings off irritability and water retention.
  • Take part in exercise you find enjoyable and also calming activities such as meditation and yoga. These reduce the effects of stress on the body and mind which can radically disturb hormones.  Vitamin C is an ‘Anti-stress’ vitamin so eat plenty of peppers, sweet potatoes and kiwis!
  • Eat foods rich in magnesium (Brazil nuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, brown rice, baked beans… and chocolate!) or consider a supplement. Magnesium is a calming mineral and can promote good sleep as well as ease painful cramping.
  • The mineral zinc balance hormones, particularly in regard to skin health. Think beef, sesame seeds, walnuts, chicken and chick peas.
  • Consider adaptogenic herbs such as ashwagandha and rhodiola. They protect against excess stress and therefore look after hormones.
